LONDON - (AP) - An American working alone on a desolate mid-Pacific island for the International Geophysical Year tapped out a last radio signal Friday. He was feeling sick, he messaged.

Wednesday the British naval landing ship H.M.S. Narvik radioed it had found the man dead of a heart attack on desolate Jarvis Island.

He was identified as Otto Horning, sometimes known as "The Hermit of Jarvis Island." He had lived for years as a recluse on several unpopulated islands in the Pacific.
