Title

Journal of Gerrit P. Judd

Description

This excerpt comes from the journal of Gerrit P. Judd, who was acting as an agent of the newly established American Guano Company. He traveled to Palmyra (along with several other nearby islands and atolls) aboard the brig Josephine, in search of new sources of guano, and with express instructions from King Kamehameha IV, to claim Palmyra for the Kingdom of Hawaii.

While the claim would not be ratified for 2 years, and the guano company would never profit from anything on Palmyra, this trip established the sovereignty of the atoll, and began a long string of efforts to profit from its resources. Few, if any, of those efforts would ever pay off.
