Island outpost almost abandoned in storm
Palmyra Island — The Navy department in Washington said January 5th that personnel on Palmyra Island had radioed that the island was being abandoned because of a terrific storm, but later advised that flood waters were receding and they were “returning to duty.” It said the tiny radio station first flashed an S.O.S. that the island was being covered by water from the storm that lashed the Hawaiian area during the last two days. Above is a view of the outpost, with the American flag flying.
