Title

Paintings of Palmyra by D H Hitchcock

Description

David Howard Hitchcock (1861 - 1943) was a prolific Hawaiian painter, and a member of the Volcano School (non-native peoples who painted dramatic depictions of volcanoes). He's also known for bringing the Boy Scouts program to the Hawaiian islands, and was its first scoutmaster.

During his career he painted several depictions of the Palmyra Atoll based on visits he took there with Judge Henry Cooper around 1914 and 1923. The paintings are visually similar and are likely of Sand Island.
